Baseball Starts 2021 Season With Win Over Arkansas Tech

HOUSTON – Connor Schmidt tossed a gem in the St. Mary's Baseball season opener as the junior went seven innings, allowing just four hits and striking out six Arkansas Tech batters. The Rattlers defeated the Wonder Boys, 10-3 at Minute Maid Park.
 
St. Mary's tallied 11 hits in the win, as four players had two hits. Johnny Hernandez drew three walks and collected three RBI.
 
The first three innings of the game were a pitcher dual as the Rattlers failed to get a hit and Arkansas Tech had just two. In the fourth frame, the Rattlers scored four runs on four hits including a two-RBI single from Shawn Tober
 
Arkansas Tech got on the board in the home half of the sixth inning after loading the bases. A sacrifice fly brought the run in, but Schmidt minimized the damage and got out of the inning, leaving two runners stranded on base. 
 
Hernandez drove in two of his three runs in the seventh inning with a bases loaded single through the left side brought home Jake Mares and Fernando Zubia. Mauro Bustamante singled to left to score Mitchell Caskey. Hernandez scored on a throwing error by Arkansas Tech on the Bustamante single to make it 8-1, Rattlers. Derek Mueller and Ryan McGowen added an RBI in the inning to make it 10-1. 
 
Schmidt gave way to freshman Logan Taylor in the bottom of the eighth inning. Taylor got two quick outs but after back-to-back doubles and a wild pitch the score was 10-3. Taylor slammed the door in the bottom of the ninth as he stranded three runners, striking out his final two batters. 
 
St. Mary's will return to action at Minute Maid Park tomorrow as they take on the host, Central Missouri Mules at 2 p.m.
