Hot Shooting Lifts Women's Basketball Past Angelo State

SAN ANTONIO – In a complete reversal from Friday evening, the St. Mary's Women's Basketball team got out to the early lead on Saturday afternoon and never looked back, defeating Angelo State 69-52.

A balanced scoring attack and a hot day from beyond the arc lifted the Rattlers to their second win of the season. They sank a season-high 12 triples and both sophomores Natalia Ryng (Gdynia, Poland) and Briley Perkins (Houston) hit four each. The 12 three-pointers ties for the fifth-most in school history and is the most since Nov. 23, 2019 at Texas-Tyler when they made 14 to establish a new school record.

All nine active players for St. Mary's scored at least two points and eight of the nine had at least one rebound in the win. Senior Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) recorded her second double-double of the year with a team-high tying 16 points and a game-best 13 rebounds. Perkins also scored 16, while Ryng scored a career-high 14 – giving her back-to-back career highs.

Senior Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) was terrific at finding the open player, tallying a career-best nine assists – which also ties her with six others for fourth on the school's single game lists. Culiver tied her career-high with dishes in the first half.

The Rattlers led wire-to-wire for the first time in 2020-21 and led by as many as 29 (4:45 left in fourth). After shooting just 24.1 percent in the first half on Friday, the Rattlers bounced back to shoot 46.4 percent on Saturday afternoon in the first 20 minutes. They ended the game shooting a season-high tying 42.9 percent from the field, as well as 44.4 percent from beyond the arc.

The Rambelles cut the deficit to two with a 10-point run at the beginning of the second quarter, but the Rattlers responded by scoring the final eight points of the half for the 34-25 advantage.

St. Mary's head back out on the road, playing a rare Wednesday afternoon contest at Texas-Tyler. The two teams return to Bill Greehey for a Saturday clash slated for 3 p.m.
