Softball Loses Two Close Ones at Lubbock Christian, Despite 13 Runs in Two Games
LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Mary's Softball team came up just short in a pair of one-run losses on Sunday at No. 20 Lubbock Christian, falling 5-4 and 10-9.
The Rattlers are now 11-18 overall and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference action, while the Rams improve to 10-6 on the year and 5-3 in league games.
Sophomore
Victoria Aldridge scored three runs in six at-bats, while junior
Abigale Carney had five RBI's in six at-bats.
Seniors
Staci Johns and
Julia Cruz got the losses from the pitching mounds, despite combining for nine strikeouts over the two games.
GAME ONE RECAP
Carney got a pair of RBI's and a run to put StMU up 3-0 in the top of the fourth in game one, but the Chaps then scored five unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 5-3 lead. Freshman
Jessica Day got a run across in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to get the Rattlers over the hump.
GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers scored first once again in the second game, with a home run from Carney to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. StMU then took a 6-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single and another home run, this time from junior
Alex Moreno. The Chaps then exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-6 lead. Sophomore
Bari Christian doubled in the seventh inning to tie it up and send it to extra innings, then
Tiffany Licon homered in the eighth inning to give the Rattlers a 9-8 lead. They were unable to hold on, however, giving up a pair of singles in the bottom of the eighth to drop their fifth in a row.
