SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's University Baseball team won their fourth consecutive game on Friday night as they defeated Texas A&M Kingsville in extra innings at Dickson Stadium. The Rattler claimed the series-opening victory via a Javelina error in the bottom of the 10th inning.
St. Mary's starter
Zach De La Garza had the longest outing of the season against the Javelinas as the lefty tossed eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out four batter.
Johnny Hernandez was the only Rattler with a multi-hit performance as the senior finished two-for-two with two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A&M Kingsville got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning when a double down the left field line allowed to Javelinas to score to open up a 2-0 lead. The Rattlers answered in the home half of the fifth after
Ragan Forrest led off with a double. Three hit batsmen later, St. Mary's had their first run of the game.
Steven Wynn evened the game at two with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Ryan McGowen.
Another RBI double in the sixth inning gave A&M Kingsville a one-run advantage but once again, St. Mary's tied the game when
Andrew Perez walked and later scored on a McGowen sacrifice in the home half of the frame.
The three-all tie would hold through the ninth inning, sending the game to extras.
Keaton Milford led off the 10
th inning with a double to left center. After an intentional walk was issued to Hernandez,
Mitchell Caskey came off the bench to pinch hit with runners on first and second with one out. Caskey dribbled a ball to the second baseman for what looked like a sure double player, but an errant throw to first allowed Milford to come around to score the game-winning run.
Jacob Koehler came on in relief and was dominant, tossing two shutout innings while striking out four to earn his second win of the season.
