LUBBOCK, Texas – The St. Mary's Baseball team stranded 11 runners in a 2-1 loss at Lubbock Christian on Sunday afternoon.
The Rattlers (5-1, 5-1 Lone Star Conference) scored their two runs on five hits, with seven of the nine spots in the lineup reaching base at least once. The Chaps (3-3, 3-3 Lone Star) took the early 2-0 lead in the third inning and hung on to salvage one win in the series.
Sophomore
Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was on base four times, drawing two walks and going 1-for-3. He also reached via a fielder's choice in the ninth.
Junior
Dylan Bells (Regina, Saskatchewan) fell to 1-1 on the year after giving up only two runs on six hits in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out four in his second appearance of the year. Sophomore
Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) worked a third of an inning, walking one and hitting another before junior
Adrian Gonzales (Pasadena, Texas) came in and shut down the Chaps for the second time in the series. Gonzales allowed only one hit in the final 1.2 frames, striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the bottom of the third, sophomore
Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) lost a high fly ball in the sun allowing a Chap to get to second. Back-to-back singles to center gave LCU the 2-0 lead for the third straight game.
Mares and senior
Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) walked back-to-back to begin the sixth inning, knocking out the Chaps starting pitcher. Senior
Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) bunted the pair over 90 feet each and junior
Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) reached on a misplayed tomahawk chop in front of the plate. Mares scored on the play for the lone run of the day.
TEAM & INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
- Andrew Perez has drawn at least one walk in all six games this season and has eight total on the year. Perez has been on base in the last eight contests – dating back to last season – and in 34 of the last 35.
- Jake Mares has at least one hit in all six games of 2020. Ryan McGowen and Derek Mueller also both have reached base in all six games this season.
- St. Mary's pitching has only allowed run in the final four frames all year. Today was no exception as the Chaps only scored runs in the third inning in the contest.
- For the second time this year, all the hits for the Rattlers were singles.
- The Rattlers added two more sacrifice bunts to their total on Sunday, bringing the total to 10 through the first six games.
UP NEXT
The Rattlers host a four-game Lone Star Conference series against West Texas A&M beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 and the series finale will also begin at 1 on Sunday.
