Sanchez Nets Two as Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team picked up its first win of the season, winning 3-1 over Metropolitan State University of Denver at Sigma Beta Chi Field on Friday night.

Luis Sanchez got the scoring started in the 15thminute off an assist from Nenad Markovic to put the Rattlers up 1-0. After a Metro State penalty in the box, Ollie Wright converted the penalty kick extending St. Mary's lead to two goals.

The Roadrunners cut their deficit in half just before the first frame ended to make it a 2-1 contest going into the intermission.

St. Mary's outshot the Roadrunners 8-3 in the opening half and held Metro State to their only shot on goal the entire night.

It remained a 2-1 game for the first 30 minutes of the second frame until Sanchez buried a ball in the back of the net for his second of the game to give the Rattlers a two-score lead with just 15 minutes left to play. Carlos Blasco and Marlon Flores were credited with the assists on the goal.

In total, the Rattlers took 12 shots, eight of which were on frame and held the Roadrunners to just four shots on the night.

Sanchez was named tonight's Pizza Patron Player of the Game for his two-goal performance.

The Rattlers will return to the pitch on Sunday as they host Colorado School of Mines at 1 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
