SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Women's Soccer opens its season on the road this weekend against Colorado Christian on Thursday and Metro State on Saturday.

ST. MARY'S

  • Corwyn Ritch enters his 19th year as the head coach of the St. Mary's Women's Soccer program in 2019, having led the Rattlers to a recent run that included six straight Heartland Conference Tournament appearances from 2011-2016. The team was picked to finish 10th in the Lonestar Conference preseason poll.

  • Senior forward Alexia Maldonado returns after leading the team in both goals and assists last season with six and five, respectively. Sophomore midfielder Victoria Villasenor is another impact player returning after scoring five goals and adding three assists last year as a freshman.

COLORADO CHRISTIAN

  • CCU head coach Tammy McPherson has been at the helm of the women's soccer program since 2003, with a short break from 2011-2015. She led the Cougars to their first NCCAA National Championship in 2016.

  • Last year the team finished with a 6-9-3 record, concluding with a loss to Colorado School of Mines in the first match of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament.

  • Forward Amanda Lopez led the team last season with six goals and four assists.

  • St. Mary's is 1-0-1 in the all-time series, with the last match in 2002 ending in victory for the Rattlers.

METRO STATE

  • The Roadrunners open the season against No. 11 Western Washington on Thursday before welcoming the Rattlers to town on Saturday.

  • Head Coach Tracy Chao begins her third season at Metro after a 10-7-1 record last year and a No. 7 national ranking. The season was cut short, however, in a first-round loss to Dixie State in the RMAC tournament.

  • Junior forward Gabriella Gamboa came in second on the team last year in goals with six, while also adding three assists. Sophomore defender Jessica Moody led the team in assists with six last year.

  • St. Mary's is 1-1 in the all-time series against Metro, winning the last matchup 4-1 in 2001.
