SAN ANTONIO – The historic run continues for the No. 11 St. Mary's University Men's Soccer team with a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Edward's University in the semifinal round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday night in front of a crowd of 338 at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
Marlon Flores was the hero for the Rattlers tonight as he buried the game-winner in the fifth minute of the first overtime period to send St. Mary's to the Championship match on Sunday.
St. Mary's will face Midwestern State for the LSC Tournament crown. This will be the third meeting between the teams this season after the Mustangs defeated Texas A&M International in the first semifinal game of the evening.
Edu Toiny-Pendred scored his ninth goal of the season in the 10
th minute as he shook two St. Edward's defenders and slipped it past a diving Kellen Guillon to make it 1-0 Rattlers.
Ollie Wright and
Lewis Wilson picked up assists on the goal.
St. Edward's found the equalizer in the 19
th minute as Parker Fyfe beat St. Mary's keeper,
Jacob Sayle.
In the 58
th minute, the Hilltoppers pulled ahead on a goal from Clark Michalis.
Working against the clock, the Rattlers trailed 2-1 until
Carlos Blasco played a free kick into the box and
Alain Peralt got his head on it and snuck it past Guillon for the equalizer with 15 minutes left to play.
After 90 minutes of action the score remained knotted at two.
In the overtime period, the Hilltoppers had two clean looks but couldn't capitalize.
Flores got his opportunity and after his initial shot was blocked by the Hilltopper defense, Flores took another shot and slid it in just past the far post to lift the Rattlers to victory.
Sunday's matchup with Midwestern State is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Sigma Beta Chi Field.
