Rattlers stunned by No. 5 Hillcats in Heartland opener

SAN ANTONIO — On Day 1 of the 2018 Heartland Conference Softball Championship, host St. Mary's fell 6-5 to Rogers State.
 
The No. 1 Rattlers were stunned by the No. 5 Hillcats who rallied from a four-run deficit. St. Mary's jumped to a 5-1 lead before Rogers State scored five-unanswered runs to end the game.
 
In the second inning, Marcela Vasquez put the Rattlers on the board with a homer to left field. Two innings later, she drove in another run with a single to second base.
 
Freshman Abigale Carney followed with a three-run homer to left field, pushing the Rattler lead.
 
In the sixth, Rogers State began its rally, connecting on two home runs before completing the comeback with one out in the seventh.
 
Vasquez posted a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Raynelle Nash and Kristal Salinas connected on one hit apiece.
 
Tomorrow, the Rattlers' season will be on the line when they host Texas A&M International in the second elimination game of the Heartland Championship.
