Rough 6th derails Rattlers in Heartland opener

CLEBURNE, Texas — A pair of two-run blasts from Donnie Perez and Angel Vega were not enough to lead St. Mary's past Lubbock Christian in the opening game of the Heartland Conference Baseball Championships as the Rattlers fell 11-5 on Thursday night.
 
Perez, the newly crowned Heartland Player of the Year, wasted little time putting the Rattlers on the board with his two-run home run in the bottom of the first. 
 
Two innings later, trailing 3-2, Vega would belt his own two-run shot to put the Rattlers back out in front.
 
James Davison was the only other Rattler to collect an RBI as the Rattlers fell to Lubbock Christian for the first time this season.
 
Newcomer of the Year Fernando Fernandez-Beltran went 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs and striking out five.
 
St. Mary's will look to win the weekend's first elimination game tomorrow against UAFS at The Depot in Cleburne, Texas.
