Rattlers take two in series opener against Chaps

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's swept the opening games of its weekend series against Lubbock Christian on Friday afternoon.
 
The Rattlers held the top team in the Heartland Conference to only a pair of runs during Friday's doubleheader, defeating the Chaps 3-1 in Game 1 before rallying to a 6-1 victory in Game 2.
 
Behind a complete-game outing from Fernando Fernandez-Beltran, as he allowed only three hits in seven innings pitched, allowing only one run.
 
James Davison produced an RBI on a 2-for-3 performance at the plate while Jacob Aguilar posted a hit, run and RBI.
 
Angel Vega capped a two-run fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle to give the Rattlers an early 2-0 lead.
 
Davison continued to deliver in Game 2, collecting a pair of hits and two RBI.
 
A 3-for-4 outing at the plate from Ragan Forrest propelled the Rattlers as the redshirt-sophomore posted a pair of RBI. His two-RBI double in the fifth put the game out of reach as the Rattlers improved to 22-10 this season.
 
Throwing eight innings, Zach De La Garza picked up his seventh victory of the season as he struck out six batters.
 
The Rattlers and the Chaps will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
