Snakes blank Dustdevils in series-opening doubleheader

LAREDO, Texas — St. Mary's clicked on all cylinders against Texas A&M International on Friday, picking up a pair of shutout victories in the first two games of a four-game series.
 
The Rattlers opened with a 5-0 win behind a two-hit shutout by Fernando Fernandez-Beltran. Tossing seven innings, Fernandez-Beltran struck out seven, allowing only one walk.
 
Leading the charge offensively was Andrew Perez who went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, three runs scored and a walk.
 
Oscar Betancourt posted a multi-hit game, recording a pair of singles in three at-bats.
 
In the nightcap, Angel Vega carried the offensive load going 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and six RBI.
 
Five other Rattlers would record two hits, including Betancourt, James Davison, Donnie Perez, Mario Vela and Nick Galaviz.
 
Zach De La Garza matched Fernandez-Beltran's Game 1 performance with a complete-game shutout of his own. De La Garza threw seven-shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out five.
 
The Rattlers and Dustdevils will wrap up their four-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday.
