FORT SMITH, Arkansas — Fourth-inning fireworks helped St. Mary's Baseball salvage the opening day of its series against UAFS.

The Rattlers erased a four-run deficit with a four-run fourth inning in Thursday's Game 2, before ultimately prevailing 6-5 on Oscar Betancourt's RBI single in the sixth.

The bounce-back victory came after the Snakes dropped the opener 6-1 to the conference-leading Lions.

Zach De La Garza threw a gritty complete-game victory, fanning eight while scattering nine hits to improve to 8-2 on the season. De La Garza's effort helped keep the Rattlers' bullpen in play for the remainder of the series, which picks back up at 1 p.m. Friday.

Angel Vega kick-started the Rattlers' big fourth inning with a two-RBI single down the left-field line, while Justin Sebo followed with an RBI double that drew the Rattlers within one, 4-3. Andrew Perez drove in the tying run on a groundout.

The Rattlers took a brief lead in the fifth, as Mario Vela brought in Betancourt on a sacrifice fly. But the Lions struck in the bottom of the frame, tying the game at 5-5.

Betancourt finished the game 3 for 5 with two runs scored, while Vega and Jacob Aguilar each recorded two hits. Aguilar accounted for the team's lone RBI in the opening game.
