Legendary Fields notches 900th career win

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — On Feb. 10, 1998, St. Mary's Donna Fields won her first game as head coach. A little over 20 years later, the legendary head coach collected her 900th career win in the first game of a doubleheader sweep against St. Edward's.

No. 19 all-time in career wins in NCAA Division II Softball, the hall of fame head coach reached her latest milestone with a 2-1 victory over the Hilltoppers in Game 1.

An RBI single from Alessandra Ortiz opened the scoring in the second inning. The senior would later score when Kristal Salinas drew a bases-loaded walk, pushing the Rattlers to a 2-0 lead.

Hannah Michel and Brenda Iparraguirre each collected a pair of hits in the ballgame as pitcher Staci Johns picked up her 14th win of the season in the circle, tossing her 11th complete-game in the process.

The nightcap was the 151st meeting between the two programs as St. Mary's cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Hilltoppers. The win marked another milestone as the Rattlers collected their 100th win all-time against St. Edward's.

Iparraguirre and Ortiz continued to produce at the plate, each posting two hits and a pair of RBI.

Kristal Salinas would also go 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI as St. Mary's improved to 27-12 overall, pushing its conference-leading record to 15-2.

In her first-career start, Alex McLennan was nearly flawless as the freshman tossed five innings, allowing only one hit and a walk while striking out four en route to her second win of the season.

Next week, the Rattlers will begin a seven-game road trip with a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian on April 3 at 2 p.m.
