Baseball opens conference with pair of shutouts over Hillcats

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, St. Mary's hosted Rogers State in the first conference games of the baseball season, defeating the Hillcats with a pair of shutouts.
 
In Game 1, Fernando Fernandez-Beltran anchored the No. 22 Rattlers to a 3-0 shutout victory.
 
Fernandez-Beltran tossed a complete game, allowing only four hits and a walk as he struck out nine Hillcat batters for his fourth win of the season.
 
Bryce Brandl and Ragan Forrest tallied RBI singles as the Rattlers as Justin Sebo, Jacob Aguilar and Andrew Perez each crossed the plate.
 
Game 2 saw a similar narrative with Zach De La Garza leading the Rattlers to a 9-0 shutout victory on the mound.
 
De La Garza went six innings, posting six strikeouts and allowing only three hits. Closing the door on the Hillcats was Matt Merrill who collected the save after tossing three scoreless innings.
 
Donnie Perez, Angel Vega, Jacob Aguilar and James Davison each recorded multi-hit games.
 
Perez and Aguilar each connected on a pair of hits for two RBI apiece as Davison posted three hits, an RBI and a run scored.
 
St. Mary's and Rogers State will wrap up the opening weekend of Heartland competition with a doubleheader tomorrow.
