Rattlers take opener, fall in nightcap to Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Oklahoma — St. Mary's pushed its conference win-streak to 10 games before falling to Rogers State in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at the Diamond Sports Complex.
 
Spearheaded by home runs from Marcela Vasquez, Taylor Germain, Raynelle Nash and Brenda Iparraguirre, the Rattlers cruised to a 9-0 victory over Rogers State.
 
Nash and Iparraguirre would each finish with two hits, two RBIs and two runs while Staci Johns dominated in the circle.
 
The sophomore pitcher tossed a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out five as she improved to 11-3 on the season.
 
In the nightcap, a furious comeback by the Cardiac Kids in the seventh inning ended with the Rattlers on the wrong side of a walk-off hit as the Hillcats stunned the Rattlers 4-3.
 
A two-run homer from Alessandra Ortiz opened the scoring in the second inning before a three-run fourth by RSU set the stage for the dramatic finish.
 
Adding to the narrative for tomorrow's series finale is control for first place atop the Heartland Conference standings. First pitch is slated for noon at the Diamond Sports Complex in Claremore, Oklahoma.
