Rattlers battle Angelo State in epic clash

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Something had to give when No. 4 Angelo State took on St. Mary's. The Rambelles had a 23-game win streak while the Rattlers held a 12-game winning streak of their own entering Monday.

In the opener, the Rattlers matched the Rambelles toe-to-toe as Staci Johns tossed a one-hit shutout in the 3-0 victory. Johns dominated in the circle as she struckout six, allowing only two hits.

St. Mary's struck first as an error in the first inning led to a two-run blast by Brenda Iparraguirre. Five innings later, Johns would contribute offensively with a solo home run of her own as the Rattlers would hand the Rambelles their second loss of the season.

The No. 4 team in the country responded with vengeance in the nightcap, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

As they've done before, the Rattlers battled back. An RBI-single in the second by Marcela Vasquez began the comeback attempt. Then a three-run fourth inning, capped by an Alessandra Ortiz two-run homer, tied the game.

A four-run fifth for the Rambelles denied all chances of a Rattler comeback as the Rattlers' 13-game winning streak came to an end.

On Wednesday, the Rattlers will head to Denton, Texas to face Texas Woman's in a two-game set.
