Newman spoils strong outing from Rattler bench

WICHITA, Kansas — Freddie Williams scored 17 points off the bench, but it wasn't enough for St. Mary's as Newman prevailed 81-68 Thursday evening at Fugate Gymnasium.

Juwan Green and Nikau McCullough added 11 points apiece off the bench, anchoring a second unit that scored 41 of the Rattlers' 68 points.

Newman put together nearly identical halves, taking a 41-33 lead into the break before outscoring the Rattlers 40-35 in the second frame. Newman (12-11 overall) improved to 8-4 in Heartland Conference play, while the Rattlers dropped to 7-16 and 3-8.

St. Mary's will hit the road for Oklahoma Christian, taking on the Eagles at 3 p.m. Saturday in Oklahoma City.
