So close: TAMIU stuns Rattlers in finals seconds

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — Texas A&M International stunned St. Mary's Men's Basketball in the waning seconds Saturday to earn the final spot in the Heartland Conference Championship tournament.

The Dustdevils raced the full length of the court and converted on a difficult go-ahead basket near the rim from Brendan Ortiz that sealed a 67-66 victory at Bill Greehey Arena. The Rattlers could not connect at the buzzer on the other end.

The win-and-you're-in game saw TAMIU steal the final spot in the conference tournament from St. Mary's, which took a 66-64 lead with 55 seconds remaining when Juwan Green sank a pair of free throws.

Petar Radojicic scored a team-high 18 points in the season-ending defeat, while senior Will Ferguson added 13 in his final game as a Rattler. Ferguson joined fellow seniors Freddie Williams and Robbie Benavides, along with team manager Gabriel Perez Esquivel, as being honored before the game as part of the Senior Day festivities.

St. Mary's opened up the game with an 8-0 lead three minutes in, and led by as much as 11 midway through the second half. But the Dustdevils clawed their way back to keep their season alive.

The Rattlers shot 51 percent from the floor, including 57 percent in the second half.
