@StMUsoftball opens conference play with sweep of Jets

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's began conference play on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Newman.

The nightcap featured a strong performance from Hope Russell who tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in a 3-0 Rattler victory.

Russell was virtually flawless, retiring 20 of the 22 batters faced without conceding a walk as she improved to 5-2 on the season.

Both she and Newman starting pitcher Nique Payne kept the game scoreless through the first five innings. That was until with two outs in the sixth, Staci Johns broke the tie on a pinch-hit, RBI single to right center field.

An Alex Moreno pinch-hit, RBI double to right would double the Rattler lead before Taylor Germain batted a run in of her own to push the Rattlers up 3-0.

Game 1 saw the Rattlers strike early with a two-run first inning, courtesy of a Brenda Iparraguirre RBI single and an Abilgale Carney RBI double.

Raynelle Nash would post a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Holding on to a 2-1 lead in the sixth, freshman Amber Gonzalez came through with a pinch-hit, RBI single before a sacrifice fly from Nash gave the Rattlers a three-run edge.

Johns would pick up the win in the circle, improving to 6-2 on the season while Alex McLennan picked up her fourth save of the season.

Next for the Rattlers will be a meeting with Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
