Softball wins 3 straight to end Florida Tech Invite

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

MELBOURNE, Florida — St. Mary's Softball wrapped up the Florida Tech Invitational with three consecutive victories over Saturday and Sunday.

The Rattlers completed the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Adelphi, which came on the heels of a 4-1 victory over Florida Tech (4-1) and an 8-4 triumph against Flagler.

Brenda Iparraguirre's go-ahead, two-RBI double in the first proved to be the difference against Adelphi, as the Rattlers (10-6) never looked back after taking a 2-1 lead. Amber Gonzales added an insurance run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.

Staci Johns picked up her second victory of the tournament, pitching six innings with eight strikeouts. Alex McLennan picked up her second save of the weekend, pitching one scoreless inning in which she allowed just one hit.

Raynelle Nash was 2 for 3 with a run scored in the game.

There was more scoring in Saturday's action, as Alessandra Ortiz was responsible for driving in two of the Rattlers' four runs in their victory over Florida Tech. Nash and Marcela Vasquez added one RBI apiece.

Hope Russell picked up the win in this game, improving to 4-2 on the year after pitching all seven innings. She cattered four hits and one run in the game.

Against Flagler, the Rattler offense was powered by a trio of home runs — a solo shot from Alex Moreno in the third, a grand slam from Nash in the fifth, and a solo blast from Abigale Carney in the sixth.

Julia Cruz earned her first victory of the season in the game, while Alex McLennan collected the save.
