Rattlers begin Florida Tech Invitational with pair of close battles

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

MELBOURNE, Florida – St. Mary's Softball began play at the Florida Tech Invitational, splitting a pair of games on Friday.

The day began with the Rattlers topping host Florida Tech 3-1 in what was a pitcher's duel between Staci Johns and the Panthers' Melanie Murphy.

It took until the fifth inning for either team to score as the Rattlers capitalized on several miscues defensively by the Panthers.

A Kristal Salinas single in the fifth set the stage for a Rattler score following an error by the left fielder.

Then in the sixth, with the game tied at 1-1, Hannah Michel reached on an error by the first baseman, scoring Alessandra Ortiz and Angie Camacho.

Brenda Iparraguirre posted a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate as Ortiz and Michel would finish the game with one hit and one run scored.

Johns would toss a complete game, allowing one earned run, striking out two.

In the nightcap, the Rattlers engaged in another offensive stalemate, this time against Lynn and this time falling 2-1 in walk-off fashion.

The top of the seventh saw Johns deliver on a pinch hit, RBI single to center field, scoring Amber Gonzales for the Rattlers' lone run of the game.

Two runs with one out in the bottom of the seventh saw the Rattlers chances of victory slip away as Hope Russell was charged with the loss, despite tossing a near-complete game with six strikeouts.

St. Mary's will continue play at the Florida Tech Invitational on Saturday beginning with a rematch against the host Panthers at 10 a.m.
