Super Mario! Rattlers power up in 10th to defeat OLLU

SAN ANTONIO — Mario Vela was super for St. Mary's when it mattered most Thursday evening.
 
Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the 10th inning, Vela drove in Oscar Betancourt on a squeeze bunt for the winning run to beat Our Lady of the Lake, 5-4.
 
The Rattlers (4-3) scored five unanswered runs, overcoming an early 4-0 deficit at Dickson Stadium.
 
St. Mary's recorded 10 hits in the victory, including a pair from shortstop Nick Galaviz in a 2-for-5 showing. James Davison added two hits as well, while Betancourt scored two runs after reaching base on a pair of walks.
 
Branson Hall picked up the ictory in relief, retiring all but three of the 12 batters he faced over three innings. He scattered one hit and two walks, buying the Rattlers' bats just enough time to strike after evening up the score at 4-4 in the seventh inning.
 
After giving up four early runs, Fernando Fernandez-Beltran settled down, striking out seven over seven innings of work that included a pitch count exceeding 100.
 
The teams will close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Friday at Dickson Stadium.
