Women's Basketball closes calendar year with win

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – It truly was a complete team effort for the St. Mary's women's basketball team on Tuesday evening against Cameron University as all eight players who saw action in the game scored at least two points and grabbed two or more rebounds in the 67-55 victory.

The Rattlers, who move to 9-2 with the victory, are tied for 24th in this week's Division II Media Poll with Glenville State. The Aggies fall to 3-6 with the loss.

Sophomore guard Soteria Banks (Round Rock, Texas) led the team with a game-high 16 points, while senior Crystal Thomas (San Antonio) scored a career-best 14 points and both senior guard Kaitlin Walla (Georgetown, Texas) and sophomore center Hannah Wilson (Fredericksburg, Texas) each added 11. Wilson also posted her fifth double-double of the year with a game-high 13 rebounds. Banks led all players with four assists and sophomore forward Audrey Wandji (Houston, Texas) had both of the Rattlers' blocked shots. Both Wilson and junior Alexia Torres (San Antonio) had a pair of steals to pace the squad.

The Aggies were led in scoring by Natalie Halbleib with 12 points and Maighan Hedge came off the bench to add 10. Both Whitney Outon and Ava Battese led with six rebounds each and Outon and Sydney Ellis each had two assists.

St. Mary's struggled shooting in the game, connecting on just 32.8 percent from the field (21-for-64) and made just 25 percent from the three-point line (6-for-24), but they shot 79.2 percent from the free throw line (19-for-24). However, the defense played tough, holding Cameron to just 32.2 percent from the floor (19-for-59) and 26.7 percent from the three-point line (8-for-30). The Aggies also shot just 50 percent (9-for-18) from the charity stripe. The Rattlers also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Aggies 47 to 42.

Banks got the scoring started for the Blue & Gold with a free throw about a minute-and-a-half into the game. The Aggies answered with a three-pointer 17 seconds later and took their biggest lead of the game with a free throw made at 7:26 for the 4-1 score. Thomas made two free throws at 7:15 to get the Rattlers within one, 4-3, but a second-chance layup pushed the lead back to three for Cameron. St. Mary's used an 8-0 run to build a five-point advantage, 11-6 and led by as many as 12 at the end of the first quarter, 20-8. Thomas led all scorers with six points, while Banks had three boards.

Cameron scored the first five points of the second quarter to cut the Rattlers lead to seven, 20-13, however freshman Meredith Marcum (Corpus Christi, Texas) sank a pair of free throws after being fouled on a break-away layup to stop the streak and make the score 22-13 with 7:53 to go. Cameron hit another jumper and then the team traded triples before the media timeout. After the break, the teams again traded points to make the score 27-20, which it would remain over the final 3:05 until Hedge hit a layup at the buzzer for the Aggies. Cameron outscored St. Mary's 14-7 in the second quarter, and held the rebound advantage 13-to-12.

The first three points of the third quarter were all at the free throw line, two by the Aggies and one by Wilson for the Rattlers. Another three-pointer by the Aggies made it a one-point game, 28-27 at the 7:39 mark. After a Thomas layup, a mini 5-0 run gave Cameron the lead back, but it was short lived as Walla immediately hit a three-pointer and Thomas followed with a layup for the 35-32 score and the Rattlers never trailed again. After a Cameron free throw, Torres and sophomore Mya Culiver (Rockwall, Texas) hit back-to-back triples to extend the lead to eight and they ended the quarter up 11, 49-38. Thomas and Walla both paced the Rattlers with six points each, while Thomas also grabbed four rebounds as the Rattlers outscored the Aggies 22-to-16.

The teams traded jumpers in the paint to open the scoring in the final stanza and with 6:18 to play, Banks hit a three-pointer for the 54-40 tally. The squads again traded buckets and then exchanged trips to the free throw line. Cameron used an 8-2 run to close the gap to nine points, 60-51, with 2:33 remaining, but were unable to get any closer and lost by 12, 67-55. Banks led the way with eight points in the final quarter, while Wilson had four boards.

St. Mary's concluded its 2018 slate with the contest against Cameron and begins 2019 with a non-conference tilt against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 5:30 p.m.
