By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas — The St. Mary's Volleyball team dropped its regular season finale in the Battle of the Saints on Saturday afternoon, falling in a tightly contested five sets to St. Edward's 22-25, 25-19, 14-25, 25-22, 12-15 in Austin.

The Rattlers even their season record at 14-14 and move to 8-4 in Heartland Conference action, while the Hilltoppers are now 17-11 overall and 7-5 in league play.

The Rattlers will next compete in the Heartland Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by Lubbock Christian - the regular season champion - on November 9-10. St. Mary's earned the two-seed in the tournament due to its regular-season sweep over UAFS.

Senior Jaycie Pluenneke (Liberty Hill, Texas) tied her career-high with 10 block assists from Oct. 19, 2017 against DBU. Freshman Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) led all the Rattlers with 18 kills and she recorded her third-straight and 10th double-double of the year with 14 digs.

Junior Bree Perry (Houston) tallied her 13th double-double of the season and her third-straight with 39 assists and 19 digs. Sophomore setter Haley Bradfute (New Braunfels, Texas) also notched a double-double in assists and digs with 14 and 12, respectively. This is her fifth double-double of the year.

Senior Channing Hankins (Katy, Texas) and junior KK Payne (New Braunfels) each added 15 kills. It was the 16th time this season Hankins has been in double figures, while it's the 10th time Payne has hit double digits.

Senior Monica Ramon (San Antonio) finished her final regular season match with 25 digs, giving her 1,030 in two years with the Rattlers. She has topped the 20-dig plateau seven times this year and in each of the last three matches.

StMU jumped out to the early 5-1 lead in the first set, but St. Edward's battled back, scoring 11 of the final 13 points of the set for the 25-22 win. Hankins picked up where she left off on Thursday evening, recording the first two kills of the afternoon and partnering with Pluenneke with a block for the third point. Hankins ended the set with five kills, while Tolbert added four.

The Rattlers tied the match at one set each with a 25-19 victory in the second set. Tolbert paced the team with five kills, while Hankins and Payne each added three. Ramon chipped in another seven digs, while Perry had 13 assists.

The third set was the opposite of the first two in that the Hilltoppers jumped out to the 3-1 lead instead of the Rattlers. StMU could never find its rhythm in the set and fell 25-14. Payne led the way with four kills, while Tolbert had three and Pluenneke added two block assists.

For the fourth straight set, the score started out 3-1, this time favoring the Rattlers. StMU stretched the lead to 12-7 behind a four-point rally, which included the team's first service ace of the afternoon by Ramon and two blocks. The Rattlers stretched the lead to eight, 19-11, but the Hilltoppers fought back to bring the score within one 21-20 before seniors Hankins and Pluenneke combined for the final four StMU points with one kill each and a pair of blocks for the 25-22 win.

There were five ties and three lead changes in the fifth set, but the home team managed to hold on for the win on their home court, winning 15-12. Tolbert added another three kills to her total, while Perry had an ace serve.
