High-energy Rattlers bounce back against TAMUK

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas — Down seven out of the gate Tuesday night, the Rattlers weren't about to forget their pre-game edict.

Promising to play with more energy, St. Mary's Woman's Basketball brushed off Texas A&M-Kingsville's early attack, going on to cruise to a 67-49 victory at The SPEC.

Arysia Porter stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals, while Kaitlin Walla added 14 points of her own for the Rattlers (2-1).

"I thought the girls played with great energy tonight," head coach Jason Martens said. "We talked before the game about how we came out flat on Saturday (in a loss to Tarleton State) and didn't want to repeat that performance tonight."

St. Mary's trailed 7-0 less than three minutes into the game, but outscored the Javelinas 20-5 over the ensuing six minutes to take a 20-12 lead late into the first quarter.

The Snakes added to their lead by outscoring TAMUK (1-2) 25-9 in the second quarter to take a healthy 45-23 lead into the break.

Walla continued to demonstrate her brilliance from long distance, leading the Rattlers' 3-point barrage with a 4-of-8 showing from beyond the arc. The senior is shooting 44 percent from 3-point range, having connected 11 times through the first three games. Porter and Meredith Marcum added a pair of 3-pointers on a night in which the Rattlers totaled 12 as a team.

St. Mary's shot 40.4 percent (21 of 52) from the floor while limiting the Javelinas to 33-percent shooting (16 of 48), and also outrebounded TAMUK 35-29.

Audrey Wandji added seven boards off the bench, while Mya Culiver contributed seven points and four assists off the pine.

St. Mary's led by as many as 26 points midway through the third quarter.

The Rattlers will be back in action later this week at the Arbor Hotels Classic in Lubbock, Texas, where they open with Texas-Permian Basin at 4 p.m. Friday at the Rip Griffin Center.
