Porter, Fields combine for 46 points

TULSA, Oklahoma — St. Mary's dynamic backcourt helped carry the Rattlers into the semifinals round at the Heartland Conference Championships.

Point guard Arysia Porter and shooting guard LaBraile Fields poured in 23 points apiece to lift No. 2-seeded St. Mary's Women's Basketball past No. 7 seed Rogers State, 72-65, Thursday at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.

The Rattlers (21-6) advance to the semifinals round, where they will face the winner of Friday's Lubbock Christian/Newman game at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the UMAC.

"You have to give Rogers State a lot of credit for how they played, but I have to give my team a lot of credit as well," Rattlers head coach Jason Martens said. "They could have buckled. But they rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter. I'm proud of the way they played and found a way to win today."

The higher-seeded Rattlers battled past a gritty Rogers State squad that was thinking upset throughout Thursday's opening-round action — especially with the Hillcats leading 52-51 entering the fourth.

But the Rattlers went on an 11-2 run midway through the final stanza, capped by free throws from Porter that opened up an 11-2 lead for the Snakes with 27 seconds remaining.

Porter and Fields combined for 30 of their 46 points in the second half, taking charge of a Rattler offense shot 46.2 percent from the floor (12 of 26) over the final 20 minutes.

"Our defense gets us going," said Fields, whose squad forced 30 turnovers. "From there we got energy, got hyped. It led to offense."

Kiara Etheridge added 12 points and eight rebounds, meaning the Rattlers' Big 3 accounted for all but 14 of the team's points.

Tia Mason carried the team's bench, scoring six points on 2-of-5 shooting over 17 minutes of action.

Though the Rattlers opened up a 20-15 lead after the first quarter, the game was tied at 32-32 at halftime. Rogers State led by one entering the fourth, but a timely 3-pointer from Porter less than a minute into the quarter seemed to get the Rattlers going.

"It was a crucial moment," Porter said of taking over the fourth quarter. "I knew we had to pick up our offense and attack."

Now, the Rattlers will regroup — and most importantly, rest — as they enjoy a day off and see who emerges from the Lubbock Christian-Newman game.

"Whew — rest," said Etheridge of her Friday plans. "It was a battle tonight.

"We are definitely going to take this day off and rest, and prepare ourselves mentally for the next game."
