Rattler rally halted in conference opener

AUSTIN, Texas — St. Mary's began Heartland Conference play on the road against St. Edward's in a Battle of the Saints that was won by the Hilltoppers, 70-62.
 
Kealani Marquez, who posted 14 points, five rebounds and three steals helped lead the Rattlers along with Arysia Porter who tallied a team-high 16 points with four rebounds and three assists.
 
Soteria Banks provided a lift off the bench with 10 points and three rebounds as Alexia Torres dropped a team-high six assists.
 
The Rattlers led early but were met with a Hilltopper surge in the second and third periods. Despite outscoring the Toppers 24-17 in the final quarter, the Rattlers were handed their first loss in nearly two weeks.
 
On Saturday, St. Mary's will look to rebound against Texas A&M International in Laredo at 1 p.m.
