Rattlers bid adieu to 2017 with victory over Cameron

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAWTON, Oklahoma — St. Mary's Soteria Banks scored a game-high 16 points Saturday, but it was her work on the defensive end that helped ice a 54-51 victory over Cameron.

Banks forced a turnover at the buzzer as the Aggies attempted to send the game to overtime, handing the Rattlers (7-8) their second consecutive victory heading into the new year.

Arysia Porter also shined bright in victory, scoring 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds and three steals. It marked the junior's third double-double of the season.

After falling behind 15-8 in the first quarter and by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, the Rattlers stormed back to trail 27-25 at the break. They surged ahead in the fourth, as Alexia Torres' go-ahead bucket with 4:41 remaining gave the Snakes a two-point lead, 50-48, that they would not relinquish.

St. Mary's defense limited Cameron to 34.7-percent shooting from the floor (17 of 49), and just 8 of 22 from beyond the arc. The Aggies missed seven of their 16 free-throw attempts, while the Rattlers hit all five attempts from the charity stripe.

The Rattlers did most of their work in the paint, outscoring the Aggies down low, 26-16.

Audrey Wandji and Sierra Dixon hauled in eight rebounds apiece, helping the Rattlers win the rebounding battle 39-34.

St. Mary's will be back in action on the road Saturday, when they take on Lubbock Christian in Heartland Conference play at 1 p.m. in Lubbock, Texas.
