SAN ANTONIO — Saturday's "Senior Day" started with a tribute of senior Tarine Grace's four-year St. Mary's career.

The ensuing "Battle of the Saints" match against St. Edward's turned into a live celebration of Grace.

Grace had a team-high 15 kills and hit .297 to help the Rattlers defeat their rival Hilltoppers 3-1 before nearly 400 fans at Bill Greehey Arena.

Jaycie Pluenneke added 14 kills, while Channing Hankins and Mandee Eberle had 13 apiece in a sizzling performance that saw the Rattlers (13-9, 6-2 Heartland Conference) hit .298 as a team.

Most importantly, the victory, paired with a UAFS loss on Saturday, leaves the Rattlers a single game out of first place behind the Heartland Conference-leading Lions.

St. Mary's opened the action with an impressive 25-16 first-set victory. St. Edward's bit the Snakes with a 25-23 victory in Set 2, but the Rattlers quickly rebounded with a third-set victory (25-16) that saw them open up with a 12-1 lead. StMU then closed out the set with a 25-15 in the fourth.

Five Rattlers recorded double-digit digs, led by Monica Ramon's 23. Mandee Eberle added 17 digs, followed by Bree Perry's 16.

Perry led all players with 61 assists.

St. Mary's, winners of five straight, improved to 8-1 at home on the season.

The Rattlers will host Howard Payne in nonconference action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Bill Greehey Arena.
