Rattlers test top-seeded SEU, drop conference tournament opener

By Brian Magloyoan | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

BELTON, Texas — The No. 4 seed St. Mary's Rattlers faced the No. 1 seed St. Edward's Hilltoppers in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Red Murff Field, dropping their first game, 9-8.

In the latest installment of the Battle of the Saints, St. Mary's struck first off a solo home run from Jack Kaiser in the top of the second inning. St. Edward's would respond with a resounding five-runs in the bottom half of the frame.

The Rattlers would score one run in each of the following three innings off a Kaiser RBI single, a Beau Barnes RBI-double and a SAC fly from Kaiser, trimming the Hilltopper advantage to one.

St. Ed's would respond with four unanswered runs pushing their lead to 9-4 in the sixth. But once again, the Rattlers would respond. A two-run homer from Angel Vega in the seventh brought the Rattlers within three.

Then a pair of RBI singles from Bryce Brandl and Donnie Perez in the eighth brought the visitors to within a run from an upset. But it was not meant to be as the Hilltoppers were able to hold on to the narrow victory.

Kaiser finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Perez was nearly perfect at the plate going 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Rattlers will face Lubbock Christian in the first elimination game of the tournament on Friday at noon.
