WT uses huge 2nd inning to down Rattlers in Super Regional opener

CANYON, Texas — To move on to the College Softball World Series, St. Mary's Softball will have to take two games from No. 1-ranked West Texas A&M on Thursday.

The Rattlers dropped the series opener Wednesday, falling 8-0 in a five-inning, run-rule shortened game before a record crowd of 767 at Schaeffer Park. 

West Texas A&M used a six-run second inning to pounce on St. Mary's early, and limited the Rattlers' explosive bats to just one hit on the day. Miranda Medina produced the lone hit on a double off the wall in left-center field in the top of the fifth inning. 

St. Mary's (47-13) will now try to replicate what it did in the South Central 2 Regional — and that is win the tournament after dropping the series opener. Last week, the Rattlers responded from a Game 1 loss to Angelo State by reeling off four consecutive victories to advance out of the region and into the Super Regional. 

Thursday's first pitch of Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set for 4 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will follow at 6:30 p.m. Rattler fans can listen to the home radio call on the Rattler Network.
