Rattlers fall short in Heartland Championship round

All-Tournament Team announced

SAN ANTONIO — The top two teams in the Heartland Conference did battle for the Heartland Conference Championship Saturday afternoon at the Softball Stadium.
 
Facing elimination for the third time in two nights, the St. Mary's Rattlers needed a victory over Lubbock Christian to force a winner-take-all championship game. In opening game of the afternoon, the Rattlers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead following an RBI-single from Marcela Vasquez in the first and a two-run blast from Hannah Michel in the second.
 
The score would remain the same the rest of the way as freshman Jorden Russell tossed 6 and 2/3 shutout innings against a tough Lubbock Christian lineup, surrendering only two hits to force a decisive game later in the day.
 
Riding the momentum of the opening game, the Rattlers struck for one run in the first inning of the championship game. Lubbock Christian would respond in a big way, scoring nine unanswered runs to defeat the defending Heartland Conference Champions 9-1 in five innings to win the title.
 
Four Rattlers were named to the Heartland Conference All-Tournament Team: Ashley Mills, Hannah Michel, Hannah Fields and Raynelle Nash.
