Rattlers shocked in Heartland Tournament opener

SAN ANTONIO — In their fourth meeting in less than a week, the St. Mary's Rattlers and the Texas A&M International Dustdevils met in the second round of the Heartland Conference Tournament. The No. 5 Dustdevils shocked the No. 1 Rattlers with a 4-3 victory Thursday afternoon at the Softball Stadium.
 
St. Mary's faced an early deficit after conceding four runs in the first three innings. With their offense held at bay, the Rattlers failed to score a run until a two-RBI double from Miranda Medina ended the drought.
 
Medina would then score after Kristal Salinas reached on an error, capping a three-run inning from the Rattlers. But the comeback would fall short as the Rattlers dropped only their third conference game of the season.
 
Both Hannah Fields and Hannah Michel each tallied a pair of hits for the Rattlers as Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year Jorden Russell picked up her first loss in 15 decisions.
 
St. Mary's will now have to stave off elimination moving forward beginning with a matchup against Oklahoma Christian slated for Friday at 1 p.m. at the Softball Stadium.
