#1 LCU eliminates Rattlers in Heartland Tournament semis

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

TULSA, Oklahoma — St. Mary's Women's Basketball fought off the No. 1-ranked team in the country for as long as they could Saturday, but Lubbock Christian ultimately proved too much to handle.

Lubbock Christian prevailed 63-52 in the Heartland Conference Tournament semifinals, advancing to Sunday's championship game while ending the Rattlers' season at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.

Kiara Etheridge led St. Mary's (18-10) with 14 points, nine of which came in a hot first quarter, and six rebounds. Mariah Lee added 10 points off the bench for her second straight double-digit performance in the Heartland Conference Tournament.

St. Mary's — the No. 5 seed in the tournament — challenged No. 1 seed Lubbock Christian (28-0) throughout the first half, trailing just 19-18 after the first quarter and 21-20 midway through the second quarter.

But then the Chaps got going.

LCU went on a 10-0 tear late in the first half to lead 31-20, setting up a 33-22 halftime advantage. The Chaps came out similarly hot in the second half, effectively blowing the game open on a 16-5 run that gave LCU its largest lead of the game, 22, at 49-27.

St. Mary's couldn't bring it to any closer than 12 in the fourth quarter, as Lubbock Christian once again pushed the lead to as high as 22 in the final moments.

The Rattlers shot just 31.8 percent in the second half after shooting 42.9 percent in the first, while Lubbock Christian hit at a rate better than 50 percent — 54.5 — in the second half to help finish the deal.

Playing her final game with the Rattlers, senior Dezirae Elias scored eight points to go along with four assists and three steals. LaBraile Fields added a nearly identical stat line with eight points, four assists and two steals.

Lubbock Christian took the season series over St. Mary's 3-0.
