Woodhill's career night lifts Rattlers into Heartland Tournament

GOODWELL, Okla. — The defending Heartland Conference champions still have life.

St. Mary's clinched the No. 8 seed for the Heartland Conference Tournament on Saturday, defeating Oklahoma Panhandle State 81-74 before a crowd of 420.

Three players scored in double figures for St. Mary's, led by Lachie Woodhill's career-high 16 points and Stefan Wright's 14 off the bench. Yanni Wetzell chipped in 12 points, while Robbie Benavides — making his first career start — added seven points and four rebounds.

The Rattlers (10-17, 6-13 Heartland Conference) led much of the game, including by as many as eight points late in the first half. But things got dicey late, as OPSU (8-20, 1-19) jumped ahead 70-65 following a 10-0 run with 3:22 left.

But St. Mary's stormed back, closing out the game on a 16-4 run for its first road win of the season.

The young Rattlers, who played five true or redshirt freshmen as part of their 11-man rotation Saturday, will learn their first-round opponent Monday night following the conclusion of Dallas Baptist's regular-season finale. If the Patriots win, St. Mary's will play top-seeded DBU in the Heartland Conference Tournament opening round. If the Patriots lose, St. Mary's will face top-seeded UA Fort Smith.

Either way, St. Mary's will open up play at 12 p.m. Friday at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Stay tuned to RattlerAthletics.com for more details on how to attend the game or watch online.
