Balanced effort leads Rattlers past RSU in Heartland opener

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Arysia Porter flirted with a triple-double in an afternoon where she flashed a Euro step several times while slashing to the basket.

And the sophomore's 15-point, 10-rebound, six-assist outing helped ensure the Rattlers opened Heartland Conference play with a bang, defeating Rogers State 75-61 at Bill Greehey Arena.

Sharp-shooting LaBraile Fields led all scorers with 19 points, draining five of her seven 3-point attempts, while Tia Mason added 11 physical points off the bench in a game the Rattlers never trailed.

On an afternoon where nine Rattlers scored, Kiara Etheridge contributed nine points and eight rebounds, while Sierra Dixon scored eight and Tyra Cormier added seven.

St. Mary's (9-2, 1-0) shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, making 26 of 53 field-goal attempts (49.1 percent) for the game. The Rattlers shot 8 of 17 from long range, while limiting the Hillcats to just 3-of-17 shooting from 3-point distance.

St. Mary's, which led 40-24 at the half, led by as many as 22 points in the game.

The Rattlers will be back in action Monday, when they host UAFS at 3 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
