Grace's career-high 18 kills not enough as Jets soar past Rattlers

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kansas — Newman blitzed St. Mary's Volleyball early Saturday, using a strong first-set victory to fuel a 3-1 triumph over the Rattlers.

Newman (19-9, 8-4) took Set 1, 25-14, and won Sets 3 and 4 by the score of 25-21 to ease past the Rattlers. St. Mary's (13-14, 5-8) won the second set, 25-23.

Tarine Grace had a career-high 18 kills to lead the Rattlers' attack, hitting .378 on a day the Rattlers hit .138 as a team. Channing Hankins also hit double figures in kills, recording 10 in defeat.

Bree Perry had a team-high 42 assists to go along with 10 digs, while Amanda Lake led the way in that category with 19 digs.

St. Mary's performed well at the net, recording 18 block assists to the Jets' 14.

But the Jets' offense as a whole was too much to handle, outhitting St. Mary's .192-.138 while recording seven more kills and four more service aces than the Rattlers.

St. Mary's will wrap up the season Thursday at Texas A&M International. The Heartland Conference match will tip at 7 p.m. from Laredo, Texas.
