Gutierrez Touchtone keeps Rattlers' title hopes alive

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — No. 7 St. Mary's Softball came swinging out of the loser's bracket of the South Central Region Tournament Saturday, run-ruling Regis in five innings, 10-2, after dropping a game to Metro State, 6-5.

The Rattlers advance to the championship bracket, earning another chance to face off with Metro State at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.

In order for StMU to advance beyond the South Central Region Tournament and into the Super Regional for the second straight season, it must beat Metro State twice as the tournament follows a double-elimination bracket and the Roadrunners go into Sunday without a loss.

After dropping a tough one to Metro State to start the day Saturday, 6-5, the Rattlers lit up, Vianna Gutierrez Touchtone in particular, to make quick work of Regis in five innings.

Gutierrez Touchtone (Sr., San Antonio) led the 10-2 charge, smacking two home runs on the game to record more than half the team's RBIs with five.

Gutierrez Touchtone, a NFCA National Player of the Year Top 10 Finalist, blew the game open in the first with a three-run homer only to follow in the very next inning with a two-run bomb.

The Rattlers scored their 10 runs off just seven hits, totaling 18 at-bats for the game.

Hope Russell (Fr., Vidor, Texas) picked up the run-rule victory, improving to 16-5 on the season.

Against Metro State, Gutierrez Touchtone first started her home run tally as she hit a solo shot in the sixth to bring the Rattlers within one, 6-5, to nearly chart a comeback.

But her homer, along with Haley Richter's (Sr., Hondo, Texas) three-run homer in the fourth, weren't enough to help her cause as she picked up the loss on the mound, dropping to 26-5 on the season.

The split puts the Rattlers at 44-10 overall on the season.

The Snakes face Metro State at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Softball Stadium inside The Park at St. Mary's.
