Women's hoops clinch postseason run with huge win over LCU

By Ruben Dominguez | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — After three consecutive games away from Bill Greehey Arena, the St. Mary's Women's Basketball returned home with a vengeance as it defeated conference leader Lubbock Christian 67-59.

The win was significant in a number of ways but most notably due to the fact that it cemented the Rattlers' place in the Heartland Conference postseason tournament.

The night was packed with some primetime performances as three Rattlers finished in double digits, combining for 54 of the team's total points

Morgan Pullins (Sr., Franklin, Michigan), the leader in scoring for St. Mary's, turned in a double-double with a 24 point, 12 rebound night.

Guards Dezirae Elias (Jr., Chandler, Arizona) and Kyra Littlejohn (Sr., Southfield, Michigan) went for 16 points and 14 points, respectively, as their clutch shooting down the stretch was influential for the Snakes to notch the victory and give the Chaps just their second league loss.

The affair began with both teams trading baskets for the better part of the first half.

St. Mary's rode the wave of LCU shooting as the standout Chap, Hannah Burton, and hit four three-pointers on her way to 17 points. The Rattlers still came out one point better, 30-29 after the first half.

Things heated up in the second half and so did the St. Mary's guards.

Elias and Littlejohn were running the show as the fed their Rattler teammates combining for 11 assists between the pair.

The turning point was an eight-point run from St. Mary's that saw Littlejohn connect with a deep three, and shortly there after battle down low for a layup before Kealani Marquez (Fr., San Antonio) duplicated her teammate's three to help take the Rattlers to the postseason chase.

The Rattlers led the remainder of the contest and closed out the game from the charity stripe, where they were an impressive 69 percent.

The win saw StMU push their record to 15-10 on the year, and 9-8 in conference play while the Chaps dropped to 21-6 and 15-2 in league play.

Head coach Jason Martens' team will return to the court in two days' time as they take on Oklahoma Panhandle State in their season finale on Senior Day. Tip-off set for 1 p.m. inside Bill Greehey Arena.
