Box Score SAN ANTONIO — St. Mary's Men's Soccer proved it knew how to capitalize on scoring opportunities Sunday in its shutout over Ouachita Baptist, 3-0, in the Rattlers' first season victory.
The Rattlers made the most out of its opportunities in their home opener at Sigma Beta Chi Field Sunday, scoring off of a free kick and impressively netting two goals off corner kicks.
St. Mary's came out strong in the first half against the Tigers (0-2), scoring two goals 15 minutes into the game.
Alex Gonzalez (RS-So., McAllen, Texas) gave the Rattlers their first goal of the match with an expertly placed free kick from 10 feet outside the box in the 11
th minute.
Three minutes later, a deflected corner kick off the Tigers' keeper gave
Victor Luna (Jr., Sealy, Texas) a close shot for the Rattlers' second goal and his first on the season.
The Rattlers struck again in the 74
th minute when
Uros Ceglaj (RS-Sr., Ljubijana, Slovenia) headed in a corner kick from
Lee Micklethwaite (Jr., Filey, North Yorkshire, England) to complete the Rattlers' 3-0 victory.
The Rattlers dominated the entire 90 minutes, allowing the Tigers just five shots throughout the match while the Snakes totaled 18 shots with 11 on target.
Mitchell Kilmer (RS-Fr., Frisco, Texas) recorded two saves in his first career shutout, improving to 1-0-1 on the season.
The Rattlers return to the road for their next matchup, facing Fort Lewis College at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Laredo, Texas.
