Box Score WICHITA FALLS, Texas — For a while Sunday, it looked like St. Mary's Men's Soccer had another 20
th-ranked team in the crosshairs.
But unlike when the Rattlers knocked off then-No. 20-ranked Fort Lewis earlier this season, Midwestern State — the new No. 20 — found a way to counter every attack St. Mary's offered, breaking open a halftime deadlock with two second-half goals in a 4-2 victory over the Rattlers before 350 fans.
St. Mary's
Ignacio Fernandez scored in the first two minutes, only to see Midwestern State score back-to-back goals in the 13
th and 16
th minutes, including on a penalty kick from Andrew Power.
Still, St. Mary's (2-2-2) battled back, as
Victor Luna took an assist from
Ignacio Fernandez and fired his third goal of the season to even the score at 2-2 in the 30
th minute.
But Midwestern State (5-1) did all the scoring in the seond half, pulling away from a 2-2 halftime score with back-to-back goals from Len Smith and Juan Farres less than two minutes apart nearing the 60
th minute.
MSU outshot StMU 20-17, with Rattler goalkeeper
Mitchell Kilmer — last week's Heartland Conference Defensive Player of the Week — recording a pair of saves in the net. Mustang goalie Nick Petolick saved five shots.
St. Mary's drew one yellow-card caution in the game, while MSU was handed three yellows.
The Rattlers will be back in action Thursday when it hosts St. Edward's in a non-conference edition of "Battle of the Saints." Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Sigma Beta Chi Field.
