LCU holds on to halftime lead to snap Rattlers' five-game win streak

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas — St. Mary's Women's Basketball could not overcome a 12-point halftime deficit Saturday, falling to Lubbock Christian 70-62 to snap a five-game winning streak.

The Chaps (8-3, 2-0) led by as many as 17 and led by double figures for much of the second half, overcoming a promising start from St. Mary's (7-3, 1-1) that saw the Rattlers leading by five, 15-10, near the midway point of the first half.

StMU's Morgan Pullins led all scorers with 26 points for her second straight 26-point game and fourth consecutive 20-plus-point showing. Pullins added 15 rebounds for her seventh double-double in 10 games, while teammate Kiara Etheridge also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Dezirae Elias scored 12 points with four steals, and was responsible for two of the Rattlers' three 3-pointers in the game.

Pullins made 10 of 22 field-goal attempts in the game, but the Rattlers connected on just 13 of their other 42 attempts in the game to shoot 35.9 percent as a team.

Trying to claw back in the second half, Elias connected from downtown to cut the deficit to nine, 48-39, with 12:54 remaining. Moments later, Kyra Littlejohn converted a steal into a fast-break layup on the other end, trimming the deficit to eight. A pair of Pullins free throws with 9:38 got the Rattlers within seven, but they would get no closer as LCU went on a quick 5-0 run to open up a 12-point advantage once again.

St. Mary's outscored Lubbock Christian 34-30 in the second half after trailing 40-28 at the break.

The Rattlers will return to the court on New Year's Day when they host Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena.
