Late layup, Pullins' big night push Rattlers past Tarleton State

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletics

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Friday it was Kiara Etheridge starring for St. Mary's. On Saturday, it was Morgan Pullins' turn to shine.

Pullins scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, hauled in 14 rebounds, and added four blocks and three steals to lead the Rattlers past Tarleton State 56-53 before 1,904 fans on the final day of the TexAnn Tip-Off Classic.

Trailing by one, Etheridge's layup put the Rattlers (2-0) back up 54-53 with 47 seconds left, and Pullins sank two free throws with 10 seconds remaining to extend the lead. Then on the defensive end, Etheridge blocked Averie Mack's attempted layup in the waning seconds, and Pullins hauled in the rebound as time expired to ice the victory.

Etheridge chipped in nine points against the TexAnns (1-1), one night after scoring 22 and grabbing 11 boards in a victory over Angelo State.

Point guard Dezirae Elias scored seven points to go along with four steals and three assists before fouling out, while Emily Troell led all bench players with four points.

St. Mary's dominated the paint, scoring 34 points down low, but struggled from beyond the arc by making just one of 11 3-point attempts. The Rattlers also committed 19 turnovers, but a stellar defensive showing helped erase any offensive miscues.

StMU forced Tarleton State into 24 turnovers, limited the TexAnns to 2-of-12 shooting from 3-point range and held them to under 40 percent (20 of 51) from the floor.

The Rattlers will return to action Friday, when they travel to Denton, Texas to play in the Texas Woman's Classic. St. Mary's opens up with host TWU at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Kitty Magee Arena.
