Volleyball ends season with rough loss to UA Fort Smith

By Robin Johnson | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Senior Kelsey Huber left it all on the court Friday night.

The four-year senior visibly played with pronounced passion Friday night in the opening round of the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament against UA Fort Smith, as the Rattlers fell 3-0 to end the season.

Huber (San Antonio) was St. Mary's Volleyball's heart in the tough loss to the Lions, who claimed the regular-season title, which saw UAFS win 25-11, 25-13 and 25-16.

Huber was the Rattlers' main defensive asset as she led both squads with 23 total digs while also being the Rattlers' attacker, leading the team with seven kills.

But Huber's determination wasn't able to overcome the Lions' (24-4) powerful presence on the court as they recorded an impressive .357 hitting percentage with 52 kills and seven service aces. The Lions advance to the title match played at 1 p.m. Saturday for a shot at their fourth straight conference title.

The Rattlers' starting libero Tori Estrada (Jr., San Antonio) picked up 16 digs for the match and Jenna Paul (Jr., Alvin, Texas) recorded five kills while setter Rachael Scicchitano (So., McKinney, Texas) led with 13 assists.

The Rattlers finished the season 11-14 overall with the loss that saw the closing of the careers of five Rattler seniors in Taylor Obermiller (San Antonio), Huber, Victorria Martinez (Arlington, Texas), Melissa Heft (San Antonio) and Devan Hartung (Hondo, Texas), all of whom played their entire collegiate careers in Rattler uniforms.
