Volleyball sweeps OPSU, inches closer to tournament berth

By Chad Peters | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

GOODWELL, Okla. -- The race for the final two spots in the Heartland Conference Volleyball Tournament is down to three teams.

St. Mary's swept Oklahoma Panhandle State in a convincing 3-0 victory Saturday, which coupled with Texas-Permian Basin's loss to Lubbock Christian eliminated the Falcons from postseason consideration.

St. Mary's (10-12, 7-7 in Heartland Conference) is vying for one of the final two spots with Newman (8-7) and Dallas Baptist (6-8). St. Mary's could clinch no worse than the fourth seed with a victory Thursday over Dallas Baptist, which would hand the Patriots their ninth loss and eliminate them from the tournament race.

Arkansas-Fort Smith and St. Edward's have already clinched their places in the tournament. Second-place Lubbock Christian is not yet eligible for the tournament as a provisional school.

St. Mary's and Dallas Baptist tip off from Bill Greehey Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6.

Senior Kelsey Huber led the Rattlers' offensive attack against OPSU with nine kills, while Jenna Paul hit .462 for a StMU squad that got better and better as the match progressed, winning 25-20, 25-16, 25-9.

Rachael Scicchitano and Kalyn Guthrie split the Rattlers' setting duties, recording 16 and 15 assists, respectively.

Meanwhile, St. Mary's all-time career digs leader Victorria Martinez led the squad with 19 digs, moving 16 digs away from surpassing Dallas Baptist's Cameron Hartson for sole possession of second place on the Heartland Conference's career digs leaders chart. Martinez has 2,302 digs in her four seasons at St. Mary's.

St. Mary's out-hit OPSU .321-.084, and had nine solo blocks in the match.
