SAN ANTONIO — Adam "Chuy" Muro sat with his head in his hands after Men's Soccer lost a heartbreaker to rival St. Edward's Monday.
The match marked the senior's and the Rattlers' final home game on the season, and for Muro (RS-Sr., San Antonio), the last home game of his career as the Hilltoppers connected for a golden goal three minutes into overtime, 3-2.
The Rattlers held the reins throughout the first half, scoring the first two goals on the game 13 minutes in, bidding for the upset against the No. 1 team in the Heartland Conference.
Jack Wolf (So., Richardson, Texas) connected in the seventh minute off a rebounded save for his 10
th on the season and
Alex Gonzalez (RS-Fr., McAllen, Texas) snapped the back of the net off a free kick for his fourth on the season.
Wolf's 10th goal this season placed him tied for No. 8 in the program's single-season goals record.
The Battle of the Saints was nothing short of emotional for either team with nine yellow cards and one red card issued in fiery exchanges. The Hilltoppers' celebration was intense as the golden-goal victory inched them closer to clinching a South Central Regional Tournament berth.
St. Mary's was able to keep up with St. Edward's throughout the three frames, which improved to 11-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in conference, getting commendable looks with eight of their nine shots being on goal.
Gonzalez led the Rattlers with five shots with four shot on goal followed by Wolf with three shots, all of which were shot on goal.
Zach Strater (Jr., Carrollton, Texas) also got a look, taking one shot that was on goal.
As a team the Rattlers put up strong defense, totaling three team saves. Keeper
Patrick Kasperitis (RS-Sr., Corpus Christi, Texas) was a wall in the net, recording eight saves with 24 shots faced in 92:45 minutes of play.
The Rattlers will have a chance to rematch the Hilltoppers in their final game on the season in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. Sunday in Austin, Texas.
