SAN ANTONIO — The St. Mary's University Women's Basketball team started aggressively in the paint and used a balanced attack to lead wire-to-wire in a 67-55 victory over UT Permian Basin on Thursday evening.
The Rattlers (13-8, 8-7) scored the first 11 points of the game and never looked back, as four players contributed to the run. Both sophomore
Christin Callens (Houston) and senior
Aina Maynou (Cabrera de Mar, Spain) scored eight points in the first half, and Callens blocked a career-high three points in the first 20 minutes to give the Rattlers a 31-22 lead at the break.
Callens led the game with 14 points, posted a career-best five steals and added six rebounds. Junior
Allie Garcia (Adelaide, South Australia) scored 11 points, with nine coming in the second half on three triples, and Maynou ended the night with 10 points, a game- and season-high seven rebounds, and she and senior guard
Quezia Bertoni (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each had a team-high four assists.
The Rattlers shot 50 percent from the field, making 22-of-44 for the game. It is the third time this season StMU has made at least half of its shots, and they've done it twice in the last three. The defense also took three charges on the night, with Maynou taking two and junior
Andrea Montesinos (Valencia, Spain) taking the other.
The Falcons (13-10, 8-7) won the battle of the boards by one, 31-to-30, and Crystal Jones led the team with 12 points. She and Kenadi Rising each had five rebounds, and Jonesha Neal dished out a game-high five assists.
The win snaps a five-game losing streak against the Falcons and is the first win over UTPB for Head Coach
Valerie Huizar.
The win moves the Rattlers into eighth place in the Lone Star Conference standings, with five games remaining in the regular season. St. Mary's faces Angelo State on Saturday. The Rambelles beat St. Edward's 73-57 on Thursday for their seventh-straight win.
