Men's hoops make strong effort in loss to No. 7 Tarleton State

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — It looked like it was going to be a comeback story for the Rattlers as they nearly upset undefeated, No. 7 Tarleton State Saturday night, 75-64, after bringing the contest within three late in the game.

St. Mary's Men's Basketball (3-4) trailed for the entirety of the game with a deficit as large as 15 in the first half. But, coming back from the break, the Rattlers were able to slowly stymie the Texans' momentum and chip away at their 13-point lead to put it within three, 58-55, with five minutes remaining.

Doing most of the heavy lifting for the Rattlers in his usual fashion was Marvin Whitt (Sr., Birmingham, Ala.) who posted a team-high 20 points. First-half starters Marvin Binney (Sr., Toronto, Ontario) and Isaiah Matthews (R-Sr., Texas City, Texas) contributed nine points apiece. Kameron Pearce (Sr., Boise, Idaho) and Kriston Minor (Jr., Huntsville, Texas) both came off the bench to chip in eight and seven points, respectively.

The Rattlers were narrowly out-rebounded by the Texans 26-24. Five Rattlers pulled down three boards apiece: Ryan Thomas (Sr., River City, Utah), Joe Monroe (R-Sr., San Antonio), Whitt, Binney, and Matthews.

The Texans, who jumped out to a seven-point lead just two minutes into the game, controlled the first frame. The Rattlers tried to prevent the Texans from breaking the game wide-open by pulling within one with 13 minutes left to play.

A lopsided foul count early (8-3) saw the Texans take advantage of their time at the line, hitting seven of their 10 free attempts.

The Texans extended their lead to as much as 15 points, seeing the Rattlers struggle to bounce back. A steal from JJ Bolton (Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) was fed to Pearce, who hit a three-pointer, brought the Rattlers within ten.

With the clock winding down in the first half, the Texans extended their lead back to 13 points, sending the Rattlers into the break trailing 36-23.

The Rattlers came into the second half ready to battle. Jumpers from Justin Alexander (Sr., San Antonio) and Bolton, and a three-point shot from Whitt brought the Rattlers within eight only two minutes into the frame.

For the majority of the second frame, the Texans (7-0) were able to maintain their lead until under the ten-minute mark when the momentum began to shift in the Rattlers' favor.

Around the eight-minute mark, the turnover count between the two teams began to even out; the Rattlers scored 12 points off of the Texans seven second-half turnovers.
The Rattlers slowly began to chip away at the Texans' lead with a five-point run that consisted of a layup from Binney and three free shots from Matthews, putting the score at 51-46.

With five minutes remaining, the Texans worked their way back to a 10-point advantage before the Rattlers made another run. Shots from Whitt and Binney, offensive boards and a tip-in from Minor put the score at 58-55, the closest the Rattlers would come to the Texans before they pulled away for good.

The Texans scored eight of their final 13 points at the free-throw line, sealing their 75-64 victory over the Rattlers.

The Rattlers will travel to Goodwell, Okla. Thursday, Dec. 18 to play their Heartland Conference opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State at 7:30 p.m.
