To the parents of all of St. Mary’s University’s student-athletes, rest assured, your son/daughter will be well taken care of by the Athletic Training staff at St. Mary’s University and by their team physicians. St. Mary’s University employs highly regarded Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) who are nationally certified by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC) and licensed by the State of Texas’ Department of Health Professions. We are devoted to the health and wellness of your son/daughter. Here is some important information regarding policy and procedures that concern you:
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA): The Athletic Training Room is an allied healthcare facility. We are held to the privacy of our student-athletes' medical information. Due to federal laws, we will not give out medical information about our athletes. Every student-athlete is required to complete a medical release of information at the beginning of each year. Because they are considered adults, they must designate who they wish us to provide any information about their medical history; this includes injuries. If you wish to get information regarding an injury, the student must designate this on the form. If they do not, and you contact any of our athletic training staff members, we must get consent from the student-athlete prior to providing this information. There is also a case-by-case instance when the student-athlete asks the Athletic Training Staff to keep certain medical issues completely confidential. We must and will respect these requests.
- Health Insurance for St. Mary’s Student-Athletes: There is an inherent risk of injury while participating in collegiate athletics. NCAA requires every participant to be covered by a primary medical insurance plan. St. Mary’s University’s Athletic Department also purchases a third-party secondary insurance to help cover its student-athletes. For more information regarding requirements and processes, please view the Athletic Insurance Coverage document.
